Trial has begun on behalf of those imprisoned in the former military complex “Campo de Mayo”. Only a handful of the several thousand victims who were secretly imprisoned and tortured at the facility survived the experience to share their story. On November 2nd of 2009, the trial began at the Federal Court of San Martín in the province Buenos Aires. It is one of the largest hearing in the history of the Agentine judicial system. Charges were filed for crimes that include illegal detention and imprisonment, torture and murder of union workers and employees. For thirty-two years the Mothers of the Disappeared have demonstrated every December 10th in front of the presidential residence with photographs and other remembrances of the children, husbands and family members who lost their lives under the regime. The courage of these women and their dedication to the demonstration, even in the face of significant danger, has garnered international support for their cause. Some have even sacrificed their lives; the organization’s founders Azucena Villaflor and Maria Bianco were abducted and murdered.

debate

digital handcraft is part of the exhibition Constant Stream: CHINA08 at the Link and Lower Gulbenkian Gallery, Royal College of Art, Kensington Gore, London , SW7 2EU from 10/05/2008 - 15/05/2008.

China today is undergoing massive change. On the one hand, Constant Stream references the current state of China, its centuries of tradition contrasting directly to the fast-changing modern society with a vast potential to impact on global affairs. It also offers a mediated discussion around the barrage of social, political, environmental and economic issues that come out of this vast country. Constant Stream aims to stimulate not only much needed dialogue between China and other cultures but also between diverse disciplines, such as architecture, art and design, in order to provoke debate, raise social awareness, formulate encounters and facilitate understanding.

Artists representing all facets of the creative spectrum – from photography and moving image work, design and architecture through to fine art and the applied arts – will be a part of Constant Stream. The Royal College of Art envisages the series of interventions as an opportunity to engage with China as a concept rather than as a fixed entity, as it is so often portrayed today.

The Berlin screening of ‘digital handcraft’ will take place at Central Cinema, Rosenthaler Strasse 39, Berlin-Mitte on Saturday April 19th 2008 at 16:30 o’clock. Bring your friends.
